The school was originally founded in the late 1950's by Mrs Betty Plant and was formerly known as the Betty Plant School of Dancing. In 1988 the school became known as the Joanne Hampson School of Dance. Then in 2005 a opportunity has arisen to allow Lorraine & Ian Byrnes to buy the school or their daughter, Taylor Byrnes as she had been pupil at the school from the age of 5 years.
